This is my attempt at a villanelle. Very difficult.
Love, do not leave me while I am still here:
I haven’t the strength to be lonely and old.
Hold, hold me hard now the ending is near.
I haven’t the time to make up for the years
of angry words shouted and love left untold.
Love, please don’t leave me while I am still here.
I hadn’t the sense when the first signs appeared:
we just kept on rocking and on the years rolled.
Hold, hold me hard now the ending is near.
I haven’t the language to tell you how dear
was the feel of your body, each wrinkle and fold:
love, please stay with me while I am still here.
I haven’t the courage to live with my fear
of dying alone in the dark and the cold:
hold, hold me hard now the ending is near.
I have only a moment: it’s too late for tears.
I cannot buy time now with flowers or gold.
For God’s sake don’t leave me, let me know that you’re near
and I’ll hold, hold you hard now the ending is here.
