Mutatis Mutandis

You
upon a beach:
curves reforming in the wind;
channels, openings emerging.
Time is changing
everything.

This is for Elodie Isabelle Daniels, 17 years old and on the move. It arose because I, like Elodie, find something in walking along beaches. When I am on holiday, I get up very early in the morning and walk along Cardigan Bay, feeling the constantly changing environment around me.

Very much smaller, but perhaps the most powerful I have written in a long while. I canot think of a word that I would remove. I like the sense of contingency created by so many words ending in "ing". I like the shape of the poem, and the shift from "you" to "everything" - like a camera zooming out to the horizon. And I like the fact that it accurately articulates the transgendered condition.
